Gami Chicken and Beer
GAMI CHICKEN AND BEER – BOX HILL’S DELICIOUS LITTLE SECRET
Tucked away under an office building on Whitehorse Road in Box Hill, in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs is Gami. I hadn’t heard of it before today. Given the little “chicken bender” that my brother Phil and I have been on over the last couple of months, I figured when he suggested it that I had to go there! One would be forgiven for driving straight past this little restaurant. It’s facade blends easily into the office building that surrounds it, and it isn’t easy to get a carpark. (Pro-tip: park at the library then walk the few blocks up the highway.)
CHICKEN AND BEER – A MELBOURNE FOOD BLOGGER’S DELIGHT
There are quite a few boutique chicken venues popping up around Melbourne. It’s a niche market that is being filled by some clever restaurateurs. As with most things in life, the ones that are keeping it simple are doing the best. Gami are following this blueprint to perfection. They have a number of stores that offer lunch specials through the week. When I went in to dine, I wanted to test them at their core (and two of my favourite things) – chicken and beer. Wings are where I am at right now. Wings, hot sauce, wine and beer. So I grabbed twelve wings – which you can split into two different flavours – and a jug of Gun:Bae Lager. I went for the original wings, and also the spicy ones.
GREAT FLAVOURED CHICKEN AND BEER
The original chicken was just amazing. With a side of honey mustard sauce, this is dangerously close to being my favourite fried chicken. I normally like things a little hot, but the flavour and texture of these wings really made my tongue dance! The spicy wings were equally as delicious – and not too hot. They are exactly as described. The taste of the spices they use on that chicken hangs around pleasantly in your mouth as you wash it down with some Gun:Bae lager – a tasty drop that is brewed exclusively for Gami. It comes by the glass, by the jug, or in a four litre oak barrel for you to enjoy with friends! Amazing.
THE WRAP
Gami is seriously good stuff. The prices are very affordable, and the size of the wings was unbelievable. I couldn’t get through mine, and was very happy to take them home for further digestion via a take-away box. They offer Uber Eats in the local area, but the restaurant itself is a lovely place to sit and dine. I will certainly be back to try more of their menu!
