Zonzo Restaurant & Train Trak Winery

Zonzo, nestled in the Yarra Valley, is an award winning winery-restaurant and wedding venue. We decided to head there for lunch before photographing a wedding, and we were so glad that we did! We had such a lovely afternoon.

We’d heard about Zonzo’s wood-fired oven from a lot of people so we knew that the pizza was going to be special, but the other dishes really took us by surprise. We shared two mains for a more than reasonable $24 and $29 respectively: “Gnocchi al burro e salvia” – handmade gnocchi with burnt butter and sage, and “Stinco di agnello” – slow cooked lamb shank in a stew of San Marzano tomato, baby carrots, baby potatoes, Spanish onion, chilli and spring herbs, served with casalinga bread. These two dishes blew us away! The meat slid off the bone. The gnocchi was so fresh. Every texture was perfect and every ingredient was top quality. You could tell that the butter was REAL butter.

There are 45 acres of vines and beautiful lawns all around, so with our remaining couple of hours before the wedding we took a stroll in the fresh air. The weather couldn’t make up its mind but we caught some patches of sunlight!

The old train tracks (after which the ‘Train Trak’ winery is named) were easy to access and made for some afternoon fun. The colours of the rust married with the earth and the grass in the surroundings, looking gorgeous in the late afternoon sunlight.

The wine at the ‘Train Trak’ winery itself was delicious and excellent value. We bought four bottles and I know we will be back for more – because as I type this we’ve already finished all of it!

The staff were warm, the setting was pretty and the wine was delicious. What more could we have asked for?

Having purchased our wine and having popped it in the car, there was time for one last wander around Zonzo’s beautiful grounds before the bride and groom were set to arrive.

The weather held out, but only just!

The venue transformed from a lunchtime restaurant to a private wedding venue quickly and seamlessly. We were as impressed by the friendly, fast, knowledgeable staff as we were by the food and drink.

On the whole we had a great evening and the wedding we photographed was fantastic. You can read more about it at our wedding blog! We hope to be back at this fantastic location for work or for pleasure again before too long.
